GRADUATE UNEMPLOYMENT CONTRIBUTES IMMENSELY TO CRIME AND SOCIAL DURESS. IT IS QUITE DISHEARTENING THAT YOUNG PEOPLE SPEND YEARS AND YEARS STUDYING, SOMETIMES UNDER EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES AND AT A GREAT COST TO THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES, ONLY TO FINISH NO BETTER OFF THAN THEY WERE ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC LADDER. THIS IS MY DRAFT PROPOSAL FOR TACKLING THIS UNACCEPTABLE SITUATION. IT IS BY NO MEANS A COMPLETE DRAFT AND FURTHER SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME. THANK YOU.
As part of any youth empowerment project, not only must quality education be provided but the government must also ensure that gainful employment is readily available at the end of every academic journey.. Academic education as a funnel of hope ought to be concluded with a fruitful reward at the end.
The major cause of crime in the society is unemployment. These are probable ways to tackle the issue:
1) Graduates should be made to register for employment at their local government council offices. Initially this scheme could focus on fresh graduates and those that have graduated within the last five years and gradually expand to embrace all.
2) Up-to-date information on recruitment into the armed forces, government agencies, etc should be readily made available. Prospective employers should be actively encouraged to hold local job fairs.
3) Help with CV compilation should be available. Tutorials on employability can be provided. Internet access should be provided and rationed among job-seekers free of charge.
4) Sports/Leisure Centres including gyms and other recreational services should be put up in each local government area to encourage relaxation and occupy the minds of the youths.
5) Public Libraries with well-coordinated membership procedures should be maintained.
6) Access to all these services should be available to local indigenes within local communities.
7) Priority should be given to candidates with good grades and good character references from their schools and/or previous employers.
8) Good Citizenship and Ethics should be taught as a compulsory module in schools
9) Voluntary work and community service should be encouraged so that unemployed youths are not idle but positively engaged. Transport/Food allowance should be paid to volunteers.
10) Post-NYSC volunteers' groups such as one for community support officers could be set up and encouraged to give priority to unemployed graduates when recruiting.
