I have often wondered about who monitors the law enforcement agencies themselves in Nigeria? Who protects us the citizens from our 'protectors' if and when they are errant? We have had numerous cases of police abuse, bullying by government officials, victimisation of the less privilleged by those in positions of authority etc etc. How do we curtail these excesses and protect the more vulnerable members of our community?
The answer I came up with is JOGs
Justice and Order Groups.
COMPOSITION
They will consist of volunteer lawyers and other professionals as well as community leaders.
DUTIES
They will organise periodic visits to police stations and prisons to ensure that there is no abuse, torture or extra-judicial incidents.
They will act as public complaints bureau for aggrieved citizens where government agencies or officials are involved.
They will have the power to recommend the prosecution of offenders directly to the Prosecution Service.
I WELCOME FURTHER SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS. THANKS.
